When Life Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore (And Your Faith Doesn’t Either)

Christian Counseling Nashville

Naturally, life may present seasons where things stop lining up the way you thought they might. Even when you did what you were supposed to and showed up thoughtfully to make the best decisions, something can still linger and feel off.

Maybe you’re going through the motions in a relationship that used to feel easy, but now feels distant or harder to reach. Or you’ve experienced a loss (of a person, a plan, a version of life you thought you’d have) and it hasn’t settled the way you thought it would. Maybe your mind doesn’t feel settled, even in moments that are supposed to feel calm. You could also just have this underlying sense that something is different in the way you’re viewing the world.

And somewhere in all of that, your faith might feel different, too. Big questions can come up, and it may feel less steady or clear than it once was. Below, we’ll open the conversation to help you feel more understood, grounded, and guided, allowing you to get curious about what’s coming up.

The Questions That Don’t Have Easy Answers

Sometimes curiosity can bring out big questions that don’t come with neat explanations or answers. These are questions like:
  • Why did this happen the way it did, even when I tried so hard to do everything right?
  • Why can’t I just move on from this already?
  • Why does this still feel so heavy when nothing is technically “wrong”?
  • What am I supposed to do next if the path I thought I’d be on no longer fits?
  • Why do I feel so disconnected from something that used to ground me?
  • What does it mean if my faith doesn’t feel the same right now?
  • Am I overthinking this, or is there actually something here I need to pay attention to?
  • What if I don’t land on a clear answer anytime soon?

Those thoughts can be hard to sit with, especially when they start bringing up things you’ve been trying not to look at too closely. It can feel easier to stay busy, push through, or look for the one idea that will make everything click back into place. But life usually doesn’t work like that. Some seasons stay messy for longer than you want them to. And when you keep trying to rush yourself to an answer, you can end up feeling even farther from what’s actually going on. Let’s talk about how to approach your thoughts with compassion and at your own pace.

You Can Be a Thoughtful Person and Still Feel Stuck

Seasons like this can often be more complex if you’re used to being the one who has it all together. You may think things through, try to make good choices, and show up for the people around you no matter what. So when things are feeling off balance internally, you may still appear fine on the outside.

At the same time, it’s harder to grapple with not being able to carry as much for others when you’re navigating complexities in your beliefs and the way you see your mind. It can show up in small, everyday ways that are hard to explain:

  • You keep replaying the same conversation, trying to figure out what didn’t land right
  • A decision you already made still doesn’t feel fully settled
  • You notice a low-level tension that doesn’t really go away, even on good days
  • Things that used to feel easy now take more effort, even if nothing obvious has changed

So you think about it more, maybe trying to make sense of it from every angle, because that’s what’s worked for you before. But sometimes, the more you try to think your way through it, the more stuck it can feel.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It usually just means this matters to you, and it’s more layered than a quick answer can fix.

When Faith Feels Different Than It Used To

Tricky moments that can be confusing usually touch on your faith and connection to something greater. What once felt grounding might not feel as stable right now, and even if you still believe and want that connection, it’s okay if it doesn’t feel as clear or as close right now.

Sometimes it sounds like:

  • “Why doesn’t this feel as comforting as it used to?”
  • “Am I doing something wrong, or is this just where I am right now?”
  • “Why do I still feel this way if I’m doing everything I’m supposed to?”
  • “What does it mean if I’m not as sure as I used to be?”

That can be hard to admit, even to yourself, without some sort of shame or guilt coming up. We want to normalize these thoughts and offer a gentle permission to remove the pressure to “fix” these feelings.

Faith doesn’t always move in straight lines. Sometimes things feel grounded and right, and sometimes you may sense more complication, more distance, or a challenge to hold onto your anchors in the same way. You can see that reflected in a lot of stories in scripture, too, where people questioned, waited, or wrestled with what was going on in their lives, even while holding a belief system.

So maybe in these moments, faith looks less like having answers and more like being honest about where you are. We want to create space for that, always.

Christian Counseling Shouldn’t Feel Like Being Talked At

This is where a lot of hesitation comes in. People worry that reaching out will mean being told what to believe, or being given answers that don’t actually fit what they’re going through. It can feel challenging to express something hard to put words to and feel like it’s not being seen and heard in the way you need.

Let’s normalize some common fears around seeking support:

  • Someone is trying to explain your situation too quickly
  • Advice that sounds right on the surface but doesn’t land in your real life
  • Conversations that skip past what you’re actually feeling and go straight to what you “should” do

A real conversation should feel different than that, and you feel the difference when you can say what you’re actually thinking, even if it’s unfinished, uncertain, or doesn’t sound how you think it “should.” Christian counseling can be a supportive outlook that respects your views and faith, while also hearing you as a human being.

It’s completely possible for faith to be part of that conversation if it matters to you, without it needing to be something that rushes you forward or forces a solution to tie everything up too quickly.

Sometimes what helps most isn’t someone explaining your life to you. It’s having space to hear yourself more clearly, without pressure to land somewhere specific.

What Starts to Feel Helpful

Most of the time, it’s not one big realization that suddenly heals everything for you. This is an opportunity to pay attention to those smaller shifts happening around your life and within you, that can shift the way you relate to what you’re going through. It might look like finally saying something out loud that you’ve only been carrying in your mind, and naming what it’s been like for you to navigate that. You might also notice that part of what you’re feeling is grief, even if it’s not tied to something obvious or recent. Sometimes it’s recognizing patterns you hadn’t fully seen before, like how you tend to carry responsibility for things that aren’t entirely yours, or how quickly you move past your own feelings to keep things steady for everyone else. And sometimes, it’s simpler than that.
It’s the feeling of:
  • Not having to explain yourself perfectly
  • Not being rushed to a solution
  • Not being told how this is supposed to make sense

Over time, things can start to feel a little less tangled, not because it’s all figured out but because you’re not carrying all of it in the same way. This is something a therapist can support you with, or you can explore in ways that make sense within your circle of support.
