Finding the right therapist makes all the difference.

Research shows that the relationship you have with your therapist is one of the biggest reasons people start to feel better. That’s why we don’t just put you with whoever has an open spot.

When you reach out, someone from our Client Care team will give you a call to hear a little about what’s going on and what you’re hoping to get from therapy. Then we’ll match you with a therapist we truly think can help someone who feels like a good fit for you.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. We’re here to help you find the right person  and we’d love to hear from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get in touch?

You can call us at 615-732-2466, fill out the contact form on this page, or email us at office@horizoncounselingtn.com. Not ready to talk to a real person yet? Email works great. Rather just call and get it over with? We love that too. However you reach out, we promise the first step is the easiest part — and honestly, it’s pretty easy.

Someone from our Client Care team will give you a call for a free, low-key conversation. No paperwork, no pressure, no commitment. We’ll just talk — about what’s been going on, what questions you have, and who on our team might be a good match for you. You’re not signing anything. You’re just talking.

Because that experience was real, and it makes total sense that you’d be cautious. Honestly? Most of the time when therapy doesn’t help, it’s a fit problem — the therapist’s style didn’t click with yours, or you never felt comfortable enough to really open up. That’s why we put real thought into matching. And if you start with someone and something feels off, just tell us. We won’t make it awkward. We’ll find you someone better.

Please don’t wait on us. Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — they’re there around the clock. You can also text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911 or head to your nearest emergency room. Our office isn’t set up to handle emergencies in real time, and you deserve help right now — not when we open on Monday. These resources are free, and you don’t have to be at rock bottom to use them.

We have four locations across Nashville and Sumner County:

  • Bellevue — 7982 Coley Davis Rd, Nashville, TN 37221
  • Donelson — 2525A Lebanon Pike, Nashville, TN 37214
  • Hendersonville — 111 Shivel Dr, Hendersonville, TN 37075
  • Gallatin — 1185 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, TN 37066

Both — and you don’t have to pick one and stick with it. We offer in-person sessions at all four locations and telehealth for anyone in Tennessee or Kentucky. A lot of our clients come in when it’s easy and hop on video when life gets busy. There’s no wrong way to do it. We just want therapy to actually fit into your life.

Nope. If doing therapy from your couch is your preference, we’re fully on board. Some clients come in occasionally just for a change of scenery — but that’s always their choice. As long as you’re in Tennessee or Kentucky, you can do 100% virtual, forever, if that’s what works for you.

Yes. We built our schedule that way on purpose, because we know that “I can’t find a time that works” is one of the main reasons people put therapy off. When you reach out, just tell us when you’re generally free and we’ll work around that.

Yes We do, because we believe in high-quality, accessible therapy for our community in Tennessee and Kentucky. We’re in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Optum, Oscar, Carelon, UMR, and Meritain. We also accept EAP benefits — if you’re not sure whether your employer offers one, a quick call to HR might surprise you. A lot of people have free sessions available they don’t even know about. If you’re not sure what your plan covers, call us and we’ll help you figure it out.

We’re not in-network with those plans right now. We do offer affordable self-pay rates and can provide a superbill for potential out-of-network reimbursement. If cost is a concern, please still reach out — we’d rather talk it through with you than have you assume it won’t work before you’ve even asked.

Yes, we do.

We offer individual therapy for kids ages 5 and up, teens, and adults. Our therapists work with a wide range of things — anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, life changes, LGBTQIA+ identity, Christian counseling, and more. If you’re not sure whether what you’re dealing with is something we can help with, just ask. The answer is usually yes.

Horizon focuses on trauma-informed individual therapy — it’s where our team’s training and experience is centered. If you’re looking for couples or family counseling, our sister practice TN Mental Wellness has great therapists who specialize in just that. We’ll make sure you end up in the right hands.

Yes — and no judgment, at all. Court-ordered therapy is a lot more common than people think, and plenty of people who start that way end up genuinely glad they did. Just let us know when you reach out so we can make sure we meet any specific requirements from the court.

We don’t — our therapists are licensed counselors, not prescribers. But here’s something worth knowing: a lot of people make real progress through talk therapy alone, without ever needing medication. If it seems like medication might be part of the picture for you, your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist would be the right next step. We’re happy to coordinate with them if you’re working with both.

You don’t have to figure that out yourself. When you reach out, we’ll ask a few questions and do the matching for you. You’re welcome to browse therapist profiles if you want but you can also just say “I have no idea, help me” and that is genuinely fine. That’s what we’re here for.

Tell us, and we’ll sort it out. The connection between you and your therapist is one of the most important parts of whether therapy actually helps. We would much rather you speak up than quietly stop coming and give up on therapy altogether. You don’t owe anyone a long explanation. We have a team of excellent therapists to choose from, and if one doesn’t feel like the right fit, just let us know, and we’ll take it from there.

That’s completely normal. Here’s what we’d want you to know: therapy is just a conversation. A private, honest, judgment-free conversation with someone who has spent years learning how to help people feel less stuck. You don’t have to show up with everything figured out. You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong. You can just show up. Most people are surprised by how much lighter they feel after that first session — not because everything is fixed, but because they finally said out loud the things they’d been carrying alone.

Your therapist will guide the whole thing — you won’t be sitting there wondering what to say. They’ll ask about what’s been going on, a little about your background, and what you’re hoping things will look like after doing this work. You won’t be pushed to go anywhere you’re not ready to go. Most people leave that first session feeling something like cautious relief — like maybe this could actually help.

We recommend starting weekly. Research backs this up — consistency early on builds momentum, and that momentum is what makes therapy actually move the needle. It’s not a permanent commitment. As things improve, sessions naturally start to spread out.

We’ll be straight with you: weekly really does work better, especially at the start, and we’d rather be honest about that than just tell you what’s easiest to hear. That said, if every other week is truly what’s workable right now, some support is always better than none. We’d rather see you every other week than not at all.

As long as it’s helping and not a day longer. Some people come in with something specific and feel significantly better within a few months. Others are working through deeper patterns and find longer-term support valuable. Most people notice something shifting within the first few sessions — not a total transformation, but a sense that things are starting to move. We’ll always be honest with you about where you are.

No. Your therapist has heard a lot not as a warning, just as context. The things you’re most afraid to say, the stuff you’ve never told anyone that’s exactly what therapy is built for. Nothing you share is going to shock your therapist or change how they see you.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor focused on diagnosis and medication. A psychologist holds a doctoral degree and specializes in psychological testing and assessment, along with therapy. A therapist or counselor — which is what our team at Horizon is — holds a master’s-level license and provides talk therapy to help you work through what brought you here. If medication or testing ever seems like part of your path, we’ll help connect you with the right person.

Yes — legally, ethically, and in practice. What happens in session stays in session. If you’re using insurance, your insurer sees basic billing information, similar to any other medical visit — but never your session content. We don’t share anything with your employer, your family, or anyone else. Your therapist will walk you through the very small number of legal exceptions before you ever begin, but for most people in most sessions, it stays completely between you and your therapist.
